WorkWatch: Manage Your Work, Track Your Time, Live Your Life
Time is the one thing we all have the same amount of, yet there’s never enough, whether you’re a 9-5 suit or a stay-at-home parent or self-employed. And unless you’ve mastered the 4-Hour Workweek, you probably negotiate the same balance of life and work I do every day. Should I — work on this project or read to my daughter? Make that conference call or play chess with my son? One more hour on the computer or help my wife with dinner? (She probably wishes that was an actual dilemma for me.)
At HD Interactive, we’ve developed and personally tested software (WorkWatcher) that tracks projects and billable employee hours efficiently and precisely for our business. And now we’ve created a program that does the same thing for a single worker. WorkWatch, built on the Adobe AIR platform and available through the Adobe AIR Marketplace, is a great way for anyone to keep track of the hours logged on multiple projects.
Logging hours is absolutely essential for the self- or work-at-home employee who bills by the hour. My brother-in-law is constantly harassed (in a loving way) by his wife, who thinks he spends a lot more time on freelance projects than he bills. By using WorkWatch and keeping track of where each hour goes on which project, he can determine for himself whether his hourly charge makes his work profitable.
WorkWatch is also an invaluable tool for people who don’t bill for their hours but are responsible for hundreds of details large and small. A stay-at-home or homeschooling parent, or any type of more flexible worker or job searcher, can use WorkWatch to see where her time goes. In seeking to use time more efficiently, to ensure that higher priority tasks are truly prioritized, a time journal such as WorkWatch is as helpful to the worker as a finance journal is to those new at budgeting or a food journal to those determined to lose weight.
WorkWatch At Work
WorkWatch is easy to use. Simply download the application (try it first with the free trial, then pay a one-time $5 fee) and start entering projects. Once you enter a project, add hours and descriptions of work completed to each project as you go along. After you’ve entered data, WorkWatch builds charts and graphs to show you exactly where your time has gone. You can also easily export your data to Excel or CSV. If and when you do need to track multiple employees and access data online, move naturally to our WorkWatcher program.
WorkWatch can’t guarantee that you’ll spend less time surfing the internet, but it’ll help you come to terms with where your time goes, and it will give you the tools to take control of your time, your work, and your life.
