Be A More Productive Worker – Change Your Work Environment
Let’s face it: we all get stuck in a rut at some time or another. Whether it’s food, clothing, or even the standard dinner-and-a-movie date night with our significant other, we find ourselves caught in a routine of convenience.  The same could be said for work.  Clients often ask us what it’s like to have an employee base who, by and large, choose to work remotely from home. The answer is typically a resounding “Great”!  Nothing sparks productivity more than feeling comfortable in one’s own environment. But sometimes even our team finds that changing it up a bit helps to recharge the creative batteries. Here, we’ll talk about one tip that helps us bring the spice back to work: a temporary change of work location.
Something as easy as working in a different room in your house can help shake things up. Â Set up at the kitchen table or on the couch. Feeling more adventurous? Â Take a trip to a local restaurant or coffee shop with free WiFi. Â We use the iPhone app Free WiFi Finder to find locations that offer the service. Â Our project manager loves Panera Bread for their free Internet and delicious coffee drinks and pastries.
There are quite a few benefits to getting up and out of the house to work.  First, you’ll notice that there are usually other remote workers out, too, and it can be quite motivating to sit among other people who are also quietly working.  Just start your favorite iTunes playlist and get down to business.  (Music can be a great motivator, as well as drowning out the sounds of coffee grinding and other’s lunch time conversations.)
At home, distractions such as household chores can break your concentration and keep you from your work. Leaving your house can help you stay focused on work tasks.
For some, working from home can also be lonely. Â If you don’t handle a lot of client phone calls, you may not get much human interaction throughout the day. Â Venturing out offers you the chance to be around other people, and maybe even make contact with some other work-from-homers or people in need of your service.
At HDI, we’ve found that changing the work environment can be a great way to increase productivity and creativity, but we recognize that different things work for different people. Â If you have a tip, please post it in our comments!
