Digital Magazine as Portfolio
At HDI, we’re always looking for new technologies and cool ways to use them. After seeing the impressive demonstrations of digital magazines like Wired, I knew I wanted our company to try something like that. Only one problem: we don’t have a magazine. But the features of digital magazines like video and interactivity seemed like a perfect outlet for our company’s portfolio.
We decided on the content we wanted to showcase and then designed the layouts for the table of contents and project pages in landscape and portrait modes using Photoshop. Showcased projects included mobile sites, our iPhone and Android apps, websites, and online training tools we’ve created for some big-name clients like EA, Pepsi and Disney.
Adobe’s Photoshop and InDesign programs worked seamlessly well together for this project. Sabrina was able to edit the content in Photoshop to make each project page and then import the Photoshop design to InDesign. Each project got a folder with two separate InDesign files: one for landscape mode and the other for portrait mode. Next, she added videos and specific images to each version to showcase the HDI projects.
Sabrina also added interactivity, including the ability to click through slideshows, select thumbnails to see larger images and select text to view different images. Pages are navigated by either sliding a bar at the bottom of the screen, or swiping left to right to browse different projects and up and down to see more information within a project article.
The portrait and landscape versions of each article (or in our case, project) are known together as a stack. These stacks are then saved and exported to the Adobe Digital Content Bundler, where they can be arranged in the desired order. When everything is perfect, the magazine is bundled, saved and ready to import into iTunes.
We use our new portfolio on the iPad and iPad2 to show potential clients the cool things we can do. We also see a hundred other uses for portfolios, from artists to musicians and more. Adobe’s Digital Magazine platform is also a great way to create sales presentations for the iPad. If you want to see our portfolio, email us to set up a meeting. We’d love to help you create one, too!
